Want the whole biography? Here’s a long winded version….
My name is Lorraine McNulty. I was born in Luton, England and grew up in what could be known as ‘Middle England’.
I went to University in Portsmouth, a naval city on the south coast of England and obtained an Honours Degree in Applied Chemistry. I put that to use after college working for several scientific companies including an Analytical Instrument manufacturer and several Water & Pharmaceutical companies.
After I decided to hang up my lab coat I started working for a scientific recruitment company that pioneered the use of temporary staff in laboratories. I loved the interaction with different people every day – I didn’t love the ‘narrow mindset’ of the management that believed that working 14 hours a day was better than working smarter for 8 hours.
A ‘bums on seats’ ethic didn’t really work for me. I wanted to be innovative. And so the entrepreneur in me was born…..
I quit my job! I was going to be my own boss. Okay so what did I know?
I had a degree in Chemistry and had worked extensively in the Pharmaceutical industry.
I quickly realised there wasn’t much I could do with that, working from home – at least not that was legal anyways!! Deciding against a life of narcotic manufacture in my kitchen I set about finding out what I was good at.
In the meantime, I ran the accounts and government paperwork for my husband who was a software freelancer. Several of his colleagues asked me if I could do the same for them – help set up corporations and run their paperwork for them. But what could I do as a business? DOH! There it was staring me in the face. I could use my organisational skills for other people. So Virtually The Office Ltd was born.
My client list grew quickly and people asked me to take on more and more tasks for them and then someone asked me to design them a website. “Sure I can do that”, I said. Remember, this was back in 1992 and the concept of the World Wide Web had only really just begun. But I am a quick learner and I know how to research things (a throwback from my Chemistry Degree!). So I became a self-appointed website designer.
It grew from there and Virtually The Office Ltd became a complete virtual office for many clients across the World, undertaking tasks from excel spreadsheet design to website design and everything in between.
In 2004, I moved my business, along with my husband, two sons and one Newfoundland dog across the ‘pond’ to Canada. We settled in the picturesque town of Port Perry on the shores of Lake Scugog.
Despite the 5 hour time difference between the UK and Canada I kept all of my UK clients and demonstrated that working ‘virtually’ really did work!
By this time I was primarily concentrating on website design so my company morphed into Maple Moon Web Design Inc., a Canadian Corporation. And that’s where I am today – Build A Blog is an offshoot of Maple Moon Web Design Inc and builds on my 20 plus years experience of online marketing, search engine optimization and business support for both online and offline businesses, by concentrating on all things to do with blogging.
Over the years I have dabbled in several MLM companies, most of whom have very ‘old school’ methods of marketing. I looked for a way to apply what I knew about the online marketplace to a MLM set-up and that’s how I came upon Attraction Marketing.
What does Lorraine McNulty do for fun?
I have two teenage boys who are both competitive golfers so I am fortunate to spend a lot of my time on beautiful golf courses around the world. My eldest has just received a golf scholarship to attend college in the US and my youngest is hoping to follow in his footsteps in a couple of years. Living the Dream, Baby!
As for me, I play the saxophone. I’ve even done the ‘band’ thing playing pubs in the UK. Although nowadays I restrain myself to just annoying the neighbours!
I play several sports – most of them bad to averagely :) Including golf and ice hockey – I’m okay with the hockey bit – it’s the ice that’s the problem!
In the past I have played many competitive sports including swimming, field hockey, table tennis, football (soccer), tennis, diving and synchronized swimming (yes I can hold my breath and smile at the same time all under water).
A few years ago I started Dragon Boat racing with the ladies from my hockey league – the Scugog Sistoars – and love it – it’s a hoot and we always raise a lot of money for breast cancer at our annual festival here on Lake Scugog.
I love my work – I’m a doer – I’ve done my share of volunteering – from the School Council to President of the local Minor Hockey League (trust me for a female Brit who is an awful hockey player – that’s an eye opener!!)
And if there’s any time left at the end of the day I like nothing better than a nice glass of wine, a good book or a movie.
So that’s me in a ‘rather large’ nutshell! I look forward to getting to know you and in particular to working with you as we start your online journey together.
